Not as complicated as you might think.
Years ago, I was driving to work with my son Joseph, who was maybe 7 years old. We heard a Christian father calling in to a radio show pleading for help and lamenting his lack of answers for questions that his children would ask him, such as- “Where did God from?”
The program host tried to encourage the caller. He spoke about how inherently difficult some questions are. And how people have tried and failed to answer them forever. But it sounded to me like he danced all around the topic, and used a lot of words to say nothing.
So where DID God come from?
I shut the radio off and said to Joseph. “Son, that’s the easiest question in the world to answer.” “If you asked me where God came from; and I told you that a being named, ‘Bob’ created God- what is the first thing you would think?” Joseph replied, “Who created Bob?” “Right!” I said. “And if I told you, ‘Never fear son. ‘Frank’ created Bob, who created God’; then what would you wonder next?” He replied, “Who created Frank?”
Exactly! So every answer fails to satisfy. It simply leads to an endless regression of more and more questions, and more unsatisfying answers; until finally we understand, by faith, that SOMEONE had to be in the beginning. SOMEONE had to be the causeless first cause.
I went on to explain. The bible says in Romans chapter 1 that God has revealed himself to every man through his planned and orderly creation. We believe that outer space is vast and infinite. If I told you that 400 billion light years away, there was a giant brick wall, and that was the end of space, what would your first thought be? My son replied, What’s on the other side of that wall? That’s right! I told him. It’s hard to imagine something being infinite, but the alternative is absurd. We KNOW that there can’t be an end to space. There’s got to be SOMETHING on the other side of that wall. Put the wall as far out there as you can imagine, yet there will always be more space on the other side of it.
God is like that. It’s mind warping for finite beings like us to fully comprehend a being with no beginning and no end. Yet God has revealed Himself to each one of us through the twin testimonies of conscience and nature. And nature reveals an infinite, 3 dimensional space, mirroring an infinite, triune God. So called scientists have made utter fools of themselves denying the obvious. They are denying the outward testimony of the natural world, and the inward witness of their conscience. That is why the Bible starts in Genesis 1:1 with, “In the beginning, God…” and says in Psalm 14 that, “The fool has said in his heart, that there is no God.” The Old Testament prophet Jeremiah preserved the following words of encouragement from God for the nation of Israel. But they apply to you and I as well. “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. ” (Jer. 29:13) The Bible says that Jesus Christ came to seek and save the lost. If you sense that you are lost, that’s the mercy of God to awaken you to your true condition. No-one seeks God apart from him drawing them. No-one seeks God until they realize they’re lost.
One can have a secondary discussion about what God is like, how he has revealed himself to the world.; and how to have a right relationship to him. But it’s utter stupidity and intellectual dishonesty to pretend that God does not exist. Our conscience is hard wired with knowledge that he is. Every building had a builder. Every painting had a painter. Likewise, Creation has a Creator. Psalm 19:1-4 declares:
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech, nor language, where their voice is not heard….”
